3 Days mount Meru Trek
Mt. Meru which is Tanzania’s second highest mountain standing tall at 4,566m. It is located in Arusha National Park and offers some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain in Tanzania. Mt. Meru is a challenging trek due to its steepness, but is a great way to acclimattize before attempting Mt. Kilimanjaro. Climbers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes. Mt. Meru also has some historical significance to it whereby some have suggested that it was the resting place of Noah’s Ark when it came to rest after the biblical flood receded. Mt. Meru is a great trekking option for those who want to take on a climbing challenge and get the sense of being out in the wild, but are not quite ready to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Start early in the morning from Arusha and drive to Momella Gate (1,500 meters) after completing the necessary paperwork and registration. Trek through the beautiful Momella Route, which offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. Continue ascending through lush forests to reach Miriakamba Hut (2,515 meters), where you’ll spend the night.
Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
After breakfast, continue your trek towards Saddle Hut (3,570 meters). Today’s trek takes you through spectacular heathlands, with the possibility of encountering a variety of wildlife such as buffalo, colobus monkeys, and different bird species. Arrive at Saddle Hut, situated on the saddle between Little Meru and Mount Meru, and rest for the night.
Day 3: Summit Day – Saddle Hut to Summit and Return to Momella Gate
Wake up very early around midnight for a light breakfast and start trekking towards the summit of Mount Meru (4,562 meters). Ascend through rocky terrain and reach the summit in time for the sunrise. At the peak, you’ll have breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. Descend back to Saddle Hut to pack up and have a hearty meal. Afterward, continue the descent to Momella Gate, where you’ll complete the trek and receive your certificate of achievement. Then you will drive back to Arusha town at your hotel or to the hotel.
